The History of Henna & Mehndi

Henna—known as Mehndi in Hindi and Urdu—is made from the crushed, dried leaves of the desert plant Lawsonia inermis, mixed with a liquid like water or tea to form a paste. Originally discovered over 5,000 years ago, henna was first used in hot climates for its natural cooling and medicinal properties. Over time, people discovered its ability to temporarily stain the skin, and it gradually evolved into the body art we know today.

Henna is now a cherished tradition in many cultures around the world, used to mark moments of celebration, joy, and community.
