The end of the semester is finally in sight, and for many students that means looking forward to downtime, catching up with family, and taking a much needed break. And while we hope your break is smooth and restful, here are some off-campus resources you can turn to if you ever need a little extra support.
The end of the semester is finally in sight, and for many students that means looking forward to downtime, catching up with family, and taking a much needed break. And while we hope your break is smooth and restful, here are some off-campus resources you can turn to if you ever need a little extra support.
Food Security: Where to Find Help
Neighbour to Neighbour (N2N) is a key multi-service agency in Hamilton offering a range of support for local residents. Their food bank provides 5–7 days’ worth of emergency food, including fresh produce, meat, dairy, bread, and non-perishables. Visit n2n.com to learn how to access the food bank.
Why this Matters
-
If you're supporting friends, roommates, or family during the break, knowing about N2N means you can help them too.
Volunteer Opportunities
Volunteering isn’t just about helping others—it can be one of the most beneficial things you do for yourself, especially as a student.
Volunteer with Neighbour to Neighbour (N2N):
-
N2N runs a variety of roles: food bank server, box-packer, freezer-sorting, home delivery driver, literacy tutor, and more.
Why Volunteering is Valuable for Students
-
Work experience: Volunteering gives you real-world experience. (managing logistics, working in a team, supporting a food operation, or organizing deliveries)
-
Networking: You’ll connect with community leaders, local nonprofits, and other volunteers. These connections can lead to references, job leads, or mentorship.
-
Scholarships / Bursaries: Many award and bursary applications ask about your involvement beyond the classroom. Volunteering in the community can strengthen your CCR record, help you stand out, and show scholarship committees that you’re engaged and committed to.
-
Personal growth: Volunteering helps you develop soft skills like empathy, communication, time-management, and problem-solving—all valuable in professional contexts.

Winter Clothing & Warmth Resources
As the temperature drops, staying warm becomes more than just comfort — it’s safety. For students or community members who might need winter clothing, here are some places to turn to:
-
YWCA Hamilton: Accepts donations of winter clothing, including warm socks, hats, mittens, and coats.
You’re Not in this Alone
Breaks are supposed to be relaxing—but for many students, they can bring unexpected stress. Knowing where to find food, warm clothes, and meaningful ways to give back can make a huge difference.
If you're feeling stretched, reach out to N2N or other local resources. And if you have the capacity, consider volunteering. You’ll help your community and build valuable experiences.
Share this blog with friends who might need it. You never know who might benefit from one timely resource. Your built-in campus besties will be waiting to support you after you return from the break!
