Welcome to Mohawk: Your MSA Student Success Guide

Starting college for the first time can feel like stepping into a whole new world. Confusing schedules, unknown hallways and not knowing where to get help when you need it can make things a lot tougher. Thankfully, being aware of campus supports and resources can be the difference between feeling lost and thriving.

Getting Around Campus & Beyond

One of the first and most useful services you should know about is the MSA Presto Bus Pass Voucher. All full-time students get a voucher for unlimited rides on HSR Buses for the semester, giving you affordable mobility across Hamilton.

How it Works

Once you register, you’ll get a voucher code sent to you through your Mohawk email. First, you’ll need your own Presto card. You can buy one at a retailer like Shoppers Drug Mart, at the MSA office on campus, or by downloading the Presto app. Then redeem the voucher online. (Note: you must wait 24 hours before using it)

Having easy, affordable transit access means more than just getting to class—it gives you freedom. Want to explore Hamilton? Visit friends. Do errands. Get groceries. It’s a small thing that goes a long way. You can visit our MSA Presto Bus Pass webpage to learn more about Presto.

Look After Yourself: Health & Dental Support

The MSA offers a comprehensive Health & Dental insurance plan—a smart safety net to fill in gaps beyond basic coverage – through Alumo. If you’re a full-time student paying the ancillary fees, you’re automatically covered. Part-time students (meeting certain requirements) can self-enroll. For new students starting in January, you can opt out or enrol your spouse and/or dependent children between January 7 - 21, 2026.

Your coverage isn’t just limited to doctor or dentist visits, it also includes mental health support. Download the Dialogue app and gain access to a variety of services. It’s comforting to know help is a tap away, especially when the stress of school starts piling up.

Student Voice & Support

The MSA isn’t just a support network, it’s also your student government, run by students for students. The elected MSA Board of Directors represents your needs, speaks up for your concerns, and helps shape what student life at Mohawk looks like.

Also, if you feel strongly about improving student life, watch out for the annual election period. Running for a position can be a powerful way to make your mark and help others.

Find Your People: Clubs and Communities

Starting college is more than academics; it’s about belonging somewhere. By joining a club or community as a new student, you can meet people who share your interests, build friendships, and avoid feeling isolated while navigating this new environment.

The MSA supports dozens of clubs and communities, and we will support you in starting your own if you don’t see one that fits.

Clubs give you a sense of purpose beyond classes, help you discover new hobbies or passions, and build a support network that often becomes the highlight of your college experience.

Plus, The MSA often helps with organizing events, funding, and promoting clubs, giving you support if you want to start something new.

Campus Life

The MSA Student Centre at Fennell Campus is more than just an office—it's a central hub where students can study, hang out, grab food or a coffee, and connect with peers. It’s often the heart of student life, and the first stop when you’re not sure where to go or what support you might need.

But support doesn’t stop at Fennell. Students are encouraged to explore our MSA offices at IAHS and Stoney Creek campuses as well. Each space offers its own community vibe and dedicated staff who can help you find the resources, answers, and guidance that fit your program and your day-to-day student experience. Wherever you are, there’s an MSA space designed to support you.

Through the Student Centre, you get access to services like:

  • Food & drinks — whether it’s grabbing a coffee, a snack, or a meal, there are a variety of places on campus to study or spend some downtime such as The Cellar, The Arnie, and the Health Study Lounge, or grab a coffee and a snack at Brewed Awakenings
  • Hanging out with friends or meeting new ones — many events and social gatherings are run through MSA, often centred around the Student Centre.
  • Support services & resources — if you need help, want to ask questions about insurance, get help from student services, or just need a place to chill between classes, the MSA Student Centre is often the first place to visit.

College doesn’t have to feel like you’re tumbling through a maze. With The MSA supporting you, there are resources, people, and systems in place so you don’t have to figure everything out by yourself.

Join a club. Use that Presto pass. Take advantage of your health and dental coverage. Reach out to your board representatives. Grab coffee with someone new. Because being a student isn’t just about coursework, it’s about building a community. And with MSA, you already belong.
