On September 26th, the Mohawk Students' Association (MSA) is excited to welcome renowned keynote speaker and best-selling author Sam Demma to another exciting event. Sam, known for his engaging performances that blend humour with powerful messages on Empathy, Mental Health, and Leadership, will speak at the Fennell campus.
This isn't the first time Sam has made an impact at Mohawk College. Last year, his performance was a pivotal part of MSA's efforts to promote the Dialogue app— free wellness services (mental health and virtual healthcare) available to all full-time Mohawk students. Sam's approach resonated deeply with the students, significantly increasing the use of mental health services on campus.
Stephanie Ribson, a third-year journalism student, says she went home after Demma’s presentation last year and purchased his book.
"Listening to Sam inspired me to look inward and consider what I carry in my backpack and how it might weigh me down. He reminded me of the importance of leaning on other people and how not to let the fear of rejection hold you back on the dance floor or in life in general," Ribson said.
Impact of the Dialogue App Post-Performance
Following Demma's previous event, the MSA saw remarkable results and engagement from the student body. Prior to his performance at Mohawk College, the MSA recorded 588 consultation sessions from September 1, 2022, to August 2023, where students received mental health support through the Dialogue App. In comparison, the period following Sam’s performance, from September 1 to December 31, 2023, the number of consultations climbed to 817—an increase of 229 students utilizing mental health support. This rise in engagement is a testament to the effectiveness of both Sam’s performance and the continued promotion of these crucial services.
After Demma’s speech, Tyler Howie, MSA Events & Communities Manager, said it was one of the most impactful presentations he’d seen in years.
“When it comes to supporting students and their mental health, this presentation is at the top of my list,” Howie said.
By reducing barriers to care, the MSA has made significant strides in supporting the mental health of its students. The success of the Dialogue app, alongside other wellness services, showcases the MSA's commitment to enhancing student wellbeing.
Looking Forward
As the Mohawk Students’ Association continues to prioritize the health and well-being of its community, events like Sam Demma's upcoming performance play a vital role in fostering a supportive and empathetic campus environment. Sam will also share insights from his best-selling book Empty Your Backpack, encouraging students to release limiting beliefs and focus on personal growth.
