What Is an Annual Meeting of the Members

An AMM is a formal gathering of the association’s general membership. All Mohawk College students who are members of the MSA are invited to take part, and students are generally members through the student fees they pay.

It is an opportunity to learn how the MSA has represented students, used student fees and worked toward its goals over the past year. It is also a space to raise concerns, share feedback, ask questions and vote on items that shape the future direction of your students’ association.

At the meeting, students can

  • Hear updates about the work and accomplishments of the MSA
  • Review the association’s financial and governing documents
  • Learn how student fees have supported services, advocacy and student initiatives
  • Raise current concerns and provide feedback
  • Participate in decisions that require approval from the membership

The MSA Board of Directors is accountable to students. The AMM is one of the ways students stay informed, ask questions and take part in that accountability.

Frequently Asked Questions

At the annual meeting, students may:

  • Receive updates on the association’s activities, finances and accomplishments from the past year
  • Review financial statements and auditor reports
  • Vote on bylaw changes, if any are proposed
  • Ask questions, raise concerns and share feedback
  • Meet their elected student leaders and learn about upcoming initiatives
  • Vote to appoint or reappoint auditors

The Annual Meeting of the Members agenda is approved by the Board of Directors. The Board determines items for the meeting and may refer items through different channels, such as the governance committee, finance committee or a town hall discussion.

The agenda is released one week before the meeting.

The Board sets the agenda. The AMM has the power to make decisions that are otherwise the responsibility of another body, such as the Board of Directors, which makes it the clearest way for the general membership to oversee the organisation directly and ensure its governing practices reflect student interests.

All MSA meetings are governed by Weinberg’s Rules, a pared-down version of Robert’s Rules of Order, to keep meetings orderly.

Weinberg’s Rules is a guide to how individuals speak to governing items, including the ethics and customs followed during a meeting.
